Indian Independence Day 2021
August 15th, 1947: while this date might seem random to the uninitiated, to Indians all around the world, it represents the origin of our nation’s pride, Indian Independence Day. This national celebration starts when the Prime Minister of the country hoists the Indian flag, a sacred idolatry representing everyone, in Mahatma Gandhi’s words, “to whom India is their home”; the Indian army, the guardians of our democracy and our rights enshrined in our constitution, perform a rendition of our national anthem. During this period of festivity, the colors orange, white, and green are embossed throughout India, signifying the equality of all races, religions and ethnicities in this plural and diverse nation.
Now, Indian Independence Day is much more than merely a day of grand celebrations; to the contrary, it is a period of time that stokes a fire of patriotism for many Indians across the world. It is a day that serves to remind us of the struggles and sacrifices made by freedom fighters such as Mahatma Gandhi, Alluri Seetha Rama Raju, Subhash Chandra Bose to birth an independent India. At the same time, August 15th guides us towards new beginnings, instigating new revelations, innovations, and movements intended to revolutionize India. While we as a country have climbed many mountains to reach our current state today, we still have a long wave of obstacles to overcome in the future; in order to leap past these challenges, we must, as our founding fathers have envisioned, break the barriers built by of race, religion, ethnicity and solve these problems in unity, encourage the creative endeavors of our people, and make India a home for everyone. Together, we can enable our country and our people to ascend to starry dimensions. Happy Independence Day, and Jai Hind!
